OTTAWA - Ottawa police say a city employee and a landlord have each been charged with fraud in an alleged kickback scheme.
Police say the city's auditor general received a complaint about an alleged scheme involving an employee with the municipal housing program in December 2024.
They allege the employee, a case worker in the program, received illicit kickback payments disguised as bonuses in exchange for approving above-market rental rates for a specific landlord participating in the program.
Police say their investigation examined alleged fraud that took place between November 2023 and October 2024.
A city employee has been charged with municipal employee receiving a bribe, while a landlord was charged with bribing a municipal employee.
They are both facing charges of breach of trust and fraud over $5,000.
