CALGARY - Jeromy Farkas has been confirmed as Calgary's next mayor.
Farkas narrowly defeated Sonya Sharp in last week's municipal election, but because the initial results were so close, a recount was ordered.
As a result, he increased his margin of victory from 581 votes to 616.
"I reached out to Coun. Sonya Sharp and congratulated her and her team on a strong campaign. I expressed my hope that Calgarians will continue to benefit from her commitment to public service," Farkas said in a statement.
"Let's get to work."Â
Farkas and Calgary's new city council members are set to be sworn in Wednesday.Â
He was a former city councillor who finished second to outgoing mayor Jyoti Gondek in 2021. Gondek finished third on Oct. 20.Â
Farkas said he has already been busy since winning the election, meeting one-on-one with each of the new councillors to set a tone for council that works together and is focused on results.
He has also met with the Calgary police commission and police service to address the need to improve downtown and transit safety, as well as with business leaders and social service organizations.
