'Resilience and bravery:' Nova Scotia honours first Black man to win Victoria Cross

In 1859, William Hall of Horton Bluff, N.S., as shown in this handout image, became the first Black man to be awarded the Victoria Cross, the British Empire's highest award for bravery. While serving with the Royal Navy in India, he was recognized for his bravery during a battle in Lucknow during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. On Monday, the Nova Scotia government honoured Hall on Heritage Day, an annual provincial holiday. HALIFAX - Against a backdrop of unimaginable racism and hardship, William Hall's courage on the battlefield in 1857 led him to become the first Black person awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military decoration.

On Monday, Nova Scotia's annual Heritage Day, the province will pay tribute to Hall, who was born in Horton's Bluff, N.S., in April 1827.
