TikTok videos with nearly two million combined views claimed to show Diana Fox Carney, wife of Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying her husband wants to "make Canada poor" during a speech on election night. This claim is false. The claimants misheard Fox Carney when she spoke the words "un Canada fort," the French version of the prime minister's campaign slogan "Canada strong."Â
THE CLAIM
"She said this on TV … this is live video not AI," read the captions on two TikTok videos posted the day after the election, which saw the Liberal party hold on to power for a fourth term.Â
The captions refer to remarks made by Diana Fox Carney as she introduced her husband, Prime Minister Mark Carney, during an election night event in Ottawa.Â
The videos claim Fox Carney said the prime minister wants to "make Canada poor."
Both TikToks had and more than plays at the time of publication.Â

Fox Carney never said she or her husband want to "make Canada poor."
Instead she said the French phrase "un Canada fort."
"It is my great pleasure to introduce my husband, the prime minister who will make Canada strong. Un Canada fort!" Fox Carney said.
Those who misheard Fox Carney claimed she introduced "the prime minister who will make Canada strong and Canada poor."Â
The phrase "make Canada poor" may sound similar to "un Canada fort."Â
The biggest clue some social media users misheard Fox Carney's words?
Carney's English campaign slogan "We are Canada strong" and its French version "Nous sommes un Canada fort" both appear on the podium beneath Fox Carney.
